Intelligent RAN control demonstrations at MWC Barcelona 2023 include
- Capgemini and Intel showcase energy-saving O-RAN rApp, that significantly reduces power consumption in O-RU by intelligently switching off/on one or more cells and/or carriers using O1 and/or Open fronthaul M-plane parameter configurations, based on cell load prediction. Off/on switching is accompanied with appropriate traffic steering, to ensure service-continuity and quality-of-service.

- Capgemini and VIAVI jointly present a solution with the VIAVI Location Intelligence xApp and rApp on Capgemini’s cloud-native Near-RT and Non-RT RIC platforms. This provides complete control of expected QoE when optimizing the network. The VIAVI Location Intelligence r/xApp provides foundational capability on RIC by offering highly granular performance & QoE measures for all subscribers and devices.

- HCLTech demonstrates Bouncer xApp, which is a Near-RT RIC benchmarking xApp deployed on Near-RT RIC along with VIAVI RIC Test as E2 node emulator in order to show the scenario when the E2 node numbers can be scaled in count of 100, 500, 1000 or more by using E2AP functional procedures. RIC Subscription request, RIC Indication are the E2AP messages used for benchmarking scenarios. In this demo 50 E2 nodes are configured from E2 node and for the same numbers, E2AP Functional procedures are performed. The communication between the xApp and E2 node(VIAVI RIC Test) is done over E2 interface.

- Lenovo presents a Deep Learning based solution that dynamically anticipate overload situations by means of a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network. This demo validates the solution in the RIC platform integrated with an E2 Node Agent software emulator.

- NYCU demonstrates an Indoor and Outdoor Positioning Use Case. The proposed hybrid positioning scheme over O-RAN and 3GPP R15 infrastructure, it presents the same accuracy level to 3GPP R16. The proposed AI-assisted analysis of the positioning mechanism utilizes UE assistance information from MEC. The Real Scenarios in the academic field can be found in this demo.

- The Open6G team at Northeastern University demonstrates zTouch, a zero-touch intent-based framework for Open RAN neutral host and private cellular applications. zTouch is designed to make complex tasks, such as managing, monitoring, and controlling 5G systems, simple and intuitive through a zero-touch intent-based automation platform.

- Reply demonstrates a sample of E2, A1, Dashboard and gRPC API capabilities which are supported by the Reply xApp through which users can monitor and control the xApps’ behaviour, as the foundation on which Reply can aid operators and vendors to develop custom RAN optimisation use cases and business logic.

- Rimedo Labs demonstrates the integration of the QoS-based Resource Allocation xApp (QRA-xApp) into the open source SD-RAN Near-Real-Time RIC from ONF. The solution highlights the opportunities to control the xApp via the policies through the A1 interface as defined by the O-RAN ALLIANCE, which enables manipulation of the behavior of the corresponding RRM algorithm based on the current strategy coming from the SMO.

- University of Málaga demonstrates the need to identify a feedback mechanism in the O-RAN architecture for the joint management of radio and virtualized resources by the inclusion of a vRAN cross management entity that interacts in the SMO with a video quality optimization rApp before sending a configuration change order via the O-RAN E2 interface. The demo proves how commands sent in the form of radio parameters through the E2 can be self-defeating without a computer-radio aware entity.

Open RAN demonstrations at MWC Barcelona 2023 include
- 4 members of the 5G WIN consortium (RunEL NGMT, Parallel Wireless, Ceragon and Pente) partnered under the Israeli Innovation Authority to demonstrate at MWC 2023 an Open RAN compliant Ecosystem. The demonstration video shows and End to End 5G Private Network using O-RAN open fronthaul interface between RunEL O-RU and Parallel Wireless O-DU and O-CU as well as Ceragon Backhaul and Pente Networks Core.

UE speed test give DL: 1066 Mbps (4 Layer) and UL: 60.8 Mbps (1 Layer).

- Viettel showcases a 5G commercial UE with Viettel 5G NSA gNodeB, which is running Viettel’s CU/DU software on the same Intel x86 server and integrated with Viettel’s Mirco O-RU, all built on the O-RAN IP/UDP architecture. The O-DU and O-RU are connected through a transport network. This is the first step on the way to Viettel’s C-RAN solution.
