Members and Participants of the O-RAN ALLIANCE bring their experts to jointly develop technical documents, defining interfaces, functions or processes of open, intelligent, virtualized and interoperable Radio Access Networks.
O-RAN specification effort is divided into technical Work Groups (WG) and Focus Groups (FG), each covering different aspects of the O-RAN Architecture.
O-RAN specification roadmap and release planning align with operators’ requirements for ‘Minimum Viable Plan (MVP)’ – set of key features enabling commercial deployment of O-RAN-based technology in mobile networks. This way, the MVP and future specification development reflect operators’ priorities.
O-RAN ALLIANCE also allows bottom-up feature prioritization, based on each WG/FG focus and state of specification development.
Each O-RAN specification undergoes phased approval process comprising:
O-RAN specifications are being adopted by European Telecommunication Standardization Institute (ETSI) and published among ETSI standards. Publishing O-RAN specifications by ETSI illustrates the global move towards O-RAN and advances the O-RAN ALLIANCE’s mission of transforming the RAN to be open, intelligent, virtualized and fully Interoperable.
O-RAN specifications and open software are enabling a broad industry ecosystem. Companies of different sizes and competencies can use them to create their innovative and competitive open solutions. Check the progress of O-RAN trials and deployments in the O-RAN Map.
